about tottington manor

Tottington Manor is nestled at the foot of the South Downs where there has been a building or settlement since medieval times. Listed as a building of archeological interest, the main part dates back to the 16th century.

Mention is made in William the Conqueror's Doomsday Book, with King Harold 1 being mentioned as a previous occupant.

The main part of the present house dates back to 1604 and has a wealth of historical facts which can be found in The Court Rolls of Tottington, held at Chichester Town Hall.

During World War 2 the Manor was used as a base for an Auxiliary Unit to provide an early warning system in case of a Nazi invasion.

A series of rooms were constructed beneath the building with a tunnel leading out into the open countryside, to provide a safe haven and escape route for the army personnel.
